| I get to the square, it started raining right away. I thought I was going to have to quit, but a toothless old gentleman who was standing nearby went and got an umbrella that he held for me while I made this, for the entire hour and a half or so that it took. Another man provided a little stool to sit on (four or five inches high). A big crowd gathered around me while I made this drawing. At one point the owner of the moped in the drawing arrived to drive it away. Some people in the crowd saw that I hadn't finished drawing it yet and charged him, admonishing him to leave it right there until I was finished. Thus chastened (and made curious) he became part of the crowd and watched until I was done. Afterwards, the owner (?) of a little cafe across the street invited me in for some tea. |
