| This morning during the cab ride from Suzhou to Shanghai I suddenly felt like a foreigner again. There were hundreds of young Chinese workers on bicycles riding to work at dawn in neatly pressed uniforms, others in old clothes as they hauled baskets of live chickens, heavy ropes, and whatnot into trucks. I wasn't a part of the activity anymore. When I got to the airport though, I had a bad scare. There was some kind of problem with my ticket and visa on my passport. I was delayed for a couple of hours wrangling with some airport officials, American Express, and the US consulate before they finally allowed me into the boarding area just a half hour shy of my planes departure time. |
